The top honor of Musician of the Year went to Finnish conductor/composer Esa-Pekka Salonen, whose dynamic leadership of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and his own distinguished compositions have captivated critics and audiences alike. Also recognized are Osvaldo Golijov, Composer of the Year; Earl Wild, Instrumentalist of the Year; Rolando Villazón, Vocalist of the Year; and the Ensemble intercontemporain, Ensemble of the Year.

Composer of the Year: Osvaldo Golijov

The 45-year old Argentine composer Osvaldo Golijov has emerged as one of the leading figures of contemporary music, with a multicultural style of exuberant dance rhythms and raw emotion that connects instantly to a wide range of audiences. A festival of his music will be presented at New York's Lincoln Center in early 2006, and Deutsche Grammophon has begun releasing an extensive series of his works on CD. His new cello concerto will receive its premiere by Yo-Yo Ma and the Boston Symphony in March.

The Musical America International Directory of the Performing Arts has been long considered the bible of the music business. An integral part of Musical America is its award-winning Web site, MusicalAmerica.com. Launched in December 1998, it quickly became the leading subscription Web site for the classical-music industry.
