Atlanta and Golijov strike a deal

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra has struck up a two-year relationship with Argentinean composer Osvaldo Golijov, which will culminate in two Deutsche Grammophon releases.

The project actually began in November with the recording and performance of two Golijov works, conducted by the orchestra's music director Robert Spano; Oceana (a cantata on a Pablo Neruda poem) and Last Round (a homage to Astor Piazzolla).

Next November, the ASO will perform and record Ainadamar, a one-act opera depicting the last days of Spanish poet and playwright Federico Garcia Lorca. This will feature Dawn Upshaw (who sang in the premiere, also with Spano, at Tanglewood in 2003), who will also record Golijov's Three Songs with Spano and the ASO.

The releases have been tentatively scheduled for 2006.
