Atlanta Symphony to present Ainadamar

The Atlanta Symphony will present three performances of Ainadamar November 9, 11 and 12, in a semi-staged version. These performances of Osvaldo Golijov's acclaimed opera will feature Dawn Upshaw, Kelly O'Connor and Jessica Rivera reprising their roles from the sold-out production in Santa Fe. Robert Spano will conduct; Santiago Calatrava, the celebrated architect of the ASO's new Atlanta Symphony Center, will design the sets.

These performances are being presented as part of the Atlanta Symphony's "Golijov Project", and will also be recorded for an upcoming Deutsche Grammophon release. The Atlanta Symphony describes the ongoing collaboration as follows:

"The Golijov Project continues and expands the ASO's record of premiering important new works in collaborations with today's leading composers.

"Argentine composer Osvaldo Golijov is celebrated around the world for choral and orchestral works that speak eloquently and universally of the human condition. Robert Spano, a champion of Golijov's works, has frequently collaborated with the composer leading to the initiation of the ASO's Golijov project.

"The legendary classical label Deutsche Grammophon of Germany is recording the ASO's Golijov Project repertoire for global distribution. This season the label records Ainadamar with the ASO and another jewel by Golijov, Three Songs, with the soprano Dawn Upshaw, for whom the work was written. Already committed to disc are the ASO's 2004-2005 performances of Golijov's Last Round and Oceana, the latter with vocalist Luciana Souza. Release is scheduled for 2006."
